Excerpt from an interview of Dr. Iliac Weston, Naturalist
Mr. Weston:

"I've been tracking, observing, and trapping rare beasts across this sector
for most of my lifetime. I often use extremely precise radar that can track the smallest fly
hovering over a pile of dung. I have a set of sophisticated scent detectors that not only tells
me what animal made the dung, but what the animal had for breakfast. Thermal sensors can tell me
the exact temperature of the dung from a mile away. All of these systems are tied into a
sophisticated computer, giving me a complete view of the environment around me. My chosen prey
simply has no chance of evading detection."

"So what do you use to actually trap the beast once you have fixed its position?"

Mr. Weston:

"Well, I still have a soft spot for the old classics. We deploy pit traps."

"Pit traps? Why?"

War is never pretty, but on the planet of Thanix III two competing factions have been
waging a particularly ugly war. The two sides have used anything and everything imaginable
to gain an advantage over their enemy. Key leaders have been brutally assassinated,
food and water are routinely poisoned in an effort to starve the enemy, and nuclear
weapon barrages are a daily occurrence across the battlefield. One key piece of terrain
has seen the lion's share of the action in this war, a place known only as the "Schism"
between the combatants. A long tar field separates rocky high ground from the outlying
deserts, and both sides fight fiercely to control the area. Offworld military observers
are convinced that whomever firmly controls the "Schism" will win the war...

FROM: Commandant L. H. Smith
RE: MCT Training Program
In this modern age of warfare, many new recruits discount the importance of Melee Combat Technique
training. While specific attention is paid while learning how to service and fire their Gauss rifles,
they never seem to learn how block a thrown punch. Last night, I disciplined a recruit who was
leaving his quarters without proper authorization and it was a embarrassingly simple matter to pummel
the lad into a weeklong coma. The deplorable shape of the recruits in our charge as well as our
training regimen needs to change, ladies and gentleman, and quickly. Platoon leaders should begin
to schedule daily sessions with our melee instructors until some noticeable improvement is achieved.
I will continue a program of random testing the recruits, placing them in the hospital if need be,
until I see that improvement. That is all.
